A Special Message. . . on the Importance of Bullying Prevention

For many people, the class bully is as much a fixture in their school day memories as chalk boards, recess and school lunch.  That doesn’t mean it should continue to be a part of our children and grandchildren’s school experiences. Children should be able to attend school or take part in community activities without fear of being harassed, assaulted or excluded. Unfortunately, the problem of bullying remains pervasive in our society.  Studies show that between 15 percent and 25 percent of children in the United States say they bully others with some frequency.  At the State Department of Education, we take bullying and other school safety issues seriously. That is why I am pleased to announce that we are now able to provide resources for classrooms, teachers, other educators, parents and community members across the state that will help us all keep Kansas children safe and informed. We cannot wait until we are confronted with crisis in our classrooms and communities to deal with these problems. Through the Kansas Education Resource Center (KERC), we are able to offer strategies, resources and information that will help you address these issues now. Please help us keep our schools safe and drug free.
